What is music therapy?

The American Music Therapy Association defines music therapy as "the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program". Music therapy utilizes music-based techniques to facilitate growth towards nonmusical goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need experience in music to be in music therapy?

No! Music therapy is accessible for everyone. Sessions vary greatly based on client needs, comfort, and interests. Music can be received actively in music making or passively in listening.

What is neurologic music therapy?

The Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy defines NMT as "a research-guided clinical model that is driven by advances in neuroscience and the understanding of the perception, production, and performance of music and how music can influence and change non-musical brain and behavior function".

Why does the initial assessment cost more?

The initial assessment includes up to 60-minutes of consultation, one session, a formal assessment using the Initial Music Therapy Assessment Protocol in addition to any other necessary tools, and a treatment plan.

Do you accept insurance?

We can accept insurance when you are referred to music therapy by a doctor. We are also an approved vendor with the Westside Regional Center!

My child is nonverbal. Can they still benefit from music therapy?

Absolutely. Music can provide opportunity for people to engage in nonverbal communication through instrument play in addition to offering a means of expressing emotion through play and composition.
